How the year developed
The euro was weakest in the first quarter. February had the lowest monthly average, 0.83071, and the low of the year came on March 3 at 0.8253. From April the euro moved up in steps: 0.85379 in April, a pause at 0.8435 in May, then 0.84981 in June and 0.86469 in July.
The second half of the year was steadily stronger. Each month from August to November had a higher average than the one before: 0.86528, 0.86895, 0.87155 and 0.87996. The high of the year, 0.8846, came on November 14. December eased slightly to 0.875 on average.
Which rate for which purpose
| Purpose | Rate for 2025 |
|---|---|
| Yearly average for income and expenses | 0.85679 |
| Closing rate at December 31 | 0.8726 |
| Opening rate | 0.83118 |
| Low (March 3) | 0.8253 |
| High (November 14) | 0.8846 |
The gap between the yearly average and the closing rate reflects the euro's rise. A company translating a euro subsidiary into pounds will show a different picture depending on which rate its policy prescribes for each line.
What the change means for trade between the UK and the eurozone
For a UK business buying from European suppliers in euros, the rise of EUR/GBP made the same invoice more expensive in pounds as the year went on. A euro invoice paid in February cost fewer pounds than the same invoice paid in November.
For a European company selling to the UK in pounds, the effect was the reverse: each pound received converted into fewer euros in the second half of the year.
Travellers noticed it too. Britons on holiday in the eurozone in late 2025 paid more pounds for each euro than they would have in the spring.
A steady trend rather than a spike
Unlike pairs that swing sharply, EUR/GBP in 2025 moved mostly in one direction, with few large reversals. The monthly ranges were modest: in every month except April the gap between the low and the high was under two pence. That makes the pair easier to plan around, because the monthly average is a fair description of most days in the month. The table also shows that the steady rise added up to a large change over the year, which matters for contracts priced once a year.
For quarterly reporting, the monthly averages can be combined directly from the table: they show a clear step up from the first quarter to the last.
