EUR to AUD in 2025: the year in numbers

Updated September 26, 2026

The euro averaged 1.7518 Australian dollars in 2025, based on 255 ECB reference rates. That was 6.83% above the 2024 average of 1.6397. The year started at 1.6618 and ended at 1.7581, a rise of 5.79%. The low was 1.6382 on February 20, and the high 1.8391 on April 9, only seven weeks later.

From the low to the high in seven weeks

The first two months were calm and cheap for euro buyers, with averages of 1.6626 in January and 1.6528 in February.

Then the euro surged. The March average jumped to 1.7158, and April brought the most dramatic move of the year: the euro traded from 1.7146 up to 1.8391 within one month, and April's average of 1.7843 was far above anything seen in the first quarter.

After April the rate never returned to the early-year levels. It settled into a band, with monthly averages between 1.7521 and 1.792 for the rest of the year.

The second half in detail

From May to December the monthly averages moved in a narrow range. August had the highest average of that period, 1.792, and a high of 1.8118. From September the euro eased gently, and December's average of 1.7634 was the lowest since May.

The difference between the first quarter and the rest of the year is the main story of 2025. Anyone who compares only January and December sees a rise of less than 6%. Anyone who compares February with August sees a much larger gap.

What it meant for Australians

Travelling to Europe. Australians heading to Europe for the northern summer paid far more in Australian dollars than they would have in February. A trip in April, at the peak, was especially expensive.

Importing from Europe. Cars, wine, machinery and pharmaceuticals from the euro area became more expensive in Australian dollars, and the higher level held for most of the year.

Exporting to Europe. Australian wine, beef and minerals sold in euros converted into more Australian dollars from April onwards.

Migrants and students. Europeans moving to Australia with euro savings received more Australian dollars, which helped with deposits and settling-in costs.

Month-end closes

Four months closed at or very near their monthly high: February at 1.6741, May at 1.7647, June at 1.7948 and March at 1.7318. For businesses revaluing euro balances at each month end, those closes produced larger revaluation gains or losses than the monthly averages would suggest.

Using the 2025 figures

For annual accounts that accept ECB rates, the yearly average of 1.7518 suits income items, and the year-end rate of 1.7581 suits balances. Australian businesses often use the Reserve Bank of Australia's rates, which are set at a different hour and can differ slightly.

For a 2026 budget, the second-half averages are a better guide than the yearly average, because the first quarter pulled the average down.

What to do

  1. Browse every month on EUR/AUD in 2025: monthly table.
  2. Compare the start and end of the year on EUR/AUD in January 2025 and EUR/AUD in December 2025.
  3. Check the EUR to AUD exchange rate today before converting savings or paying a euro invoice.
  4. For large transfers, split the amount over several dates to reduce the effect of a sudden move like the one in April.
