Above 70 US cents, three times
For many Australians the key question is whether the Aussie dollar is above or below 70 US cents. In July 2026 it crossed that line three times:
- On July 16 it reached 0.70083, after gains of 0.58% and 0.37% on the two previous fixings.
- It fell back 0.47% on July 17, then rose above the line again on July 20 and July 21, to 0.70152.
- After slipping back below for the last week, it jumped 0.59% on July 30 and 0.53% on July 31 to finish at 0.7018.
The largest daily gain of the month came earlier, on July 3, at 0.71%. Up and down days were nearly balanced, 12 against 11.

A lower average, a stronger finish
The July average was below June, because the month started weak. The finish was strong, though, and the closing rate of 0.7018 was the best of July. Anyone reading only the average would miss that the Aussie dollar entered August with momentum.
Australians and the US dollar
Travel to the United States. A trip booked at the end of July got the most US dollars per Australian dollar of the month. Compared with last year, each Aussie dollar bought about 6.5% more.
Online shopping. Many Australians buy from US stores. Prices converted at the start of July were the most expensive of the month.
Exporters. Australia sells iron ore, coal, gas and agricultural products largely in US dollars. A stronger Aussie dollar means fewer Australian dollars per ton shipped, which weighs on miners' revenue.
Investors. Australians holding US shares saw the Australian dollar value of those holdings fall slightly as the local currency strengthened.
How the rate is calculated
The ECB publishes both currencies against the euro. AUD/USD is the ratio of those two fixings for each business day. The Reserve Bank of Australia publishes its own daily rates, set at a different time, so small differences are normal.
