USD to JPY in July 2026: high, low, average

Updated September 26, 2026

The dollar averaged 162.51 Japanese yen in July 2026, based on 23 ECB-based cross rates. For most of the month the dollar crept higher, reaching 163.91 on July 28. Then the last two fixings changed the picture: the dollar fell 0.45% on July 30 and 1.66% on July 31, closing the month at its low of 160.24.

A slow climb and a sudden drop

July 1 to 10: choppy. The dollar started at 162.71, dipped to 161.15 on July 3, jumped 0.74% on July 6, the biggest gain of the month, and moved back and forth between 161.87 and 162.49.

July 13 to 28: a steady climb. The dollar rose on most fixings, from 162.14 on July 13 to 163.82 on July 24 and the high of 163.91 on July 28. Daily moves were small, mostly around 0.2%.

July 29 to 31: the reversal. Three falls in a row, ending with the sharpest move of the month on July 31. That single day erased more than the whole climb of the second half.

Up days outnumbered down days 13 to 10, and the dollar still ended the month 1.52% lower than it started.

Why the last day matters

When a month ends with a big move, the monthly average and the closing rate tell different stories. The average of 162.51 describes July as a whole. The closing rate of 160.24 describes where the market stood going into August. For decisions made in early August, the closing rate was the better guide.

For accounting, both have their place: the average for income and expense items, and the closing rate for revaluing dollar or yen balances at the end of July, if the accounting policy allows ECB-based rates.

What a weak yen means

For visitors to Japan. Tourists paying in dollars found Japan much cheaper than a year ago. At the July average, one yen was worth 0.0061538 dollars.

For Japanese importers. Energy, food and raw materials priced in dollars cost far more in yen than last year.

For Japanese exporters. Car makers and electronics firms earning dollars converted them into more yen, which supports reported profits.

For investors. Japanese holders of US assets gained in yen terms over the year, and the drop at the end of July trimmed some of that gain.
