Updated September 26, 2026

The Australian dollar averaged 0.64483 US dollars in 2025, based on 255 cross rates from European Central Bank fixings. The yearly average was 2.33% below 2024 (0.66018), but the currency ended the year much stronger than it started: from 0.62107 on the first fixing to 0.66834 on the last, a rise of 7.61%.

The year's low arrived on April 9, when the rate fell to 0.60057. April's monthly range was the widest of the year, from that low to 0.64079 within the same month. From there the Australian dollar climbed with only short pauses, and the high of the year, 0.67021, came on December 24.

The first quarter was the weakest stretch, with monthly averages of 0.62276, 0.63001 and 0.62982. The second half was consistently stronger: no month from July onward averaged below 0.64908, the August figure. December, at 0.66401, had the highest average of the year.

What the year meant for Australians

Travel and online shopping in US dollars. Early 2025 was the most expensive time to buy US dollars, since each Australian dollar bought the fewest. By December, the same Australian dollar bought noticeably more. A holiday budget planned in January could have stretched further if the trip took place late in the year.

Exporters paid in US dollars. Mining, agriculture and education exporters that receive US dollars got the most Australian dollars per US dollar in the first half. As the Australian dollar rose, the same US dollar revenue converted into fewer Australian dollars.

Investors in US assets. Returns on US shares and bonds measured in Australian dollars were reduced by the currency's rise over the year, because each US dollar of value converted back into fewer Australian dollars.

Why the average and the trend disagree

A yearly average below the previous year's, together with a strong rise during the year, can look contradictory. The explanation is timing. 2024 averaged 0.66018, and 2025 started far below that level. Even after a strong recovery, the first-quarter months, which averaged between 0.62276 and 0.63001, pulled the 2025 average down. For planning, the closing rate of 0.66834 and the recent monthly averages say more about current conditions than the yearly average does.

Using the figures in accounts

Businesses reporting in Australian dollars often translate US dollar income at a monthly or yearly average and balances at the closing rate. For 2025, that means 0.64483 for the year and 0.66834 at year end, if the reporting policy follows that approach. Whatever the method, keep it the same from year to year.

A note on volatility

The Australian dollar is often described as a risk-sensitive currency, and 2025 showed wide swings in some months and calm in others. April's range of just over four US cents within a single month contrasts with quieter months such as May, which stayed between 0.63886 and 0.65079. For anyone who converts regularly, a monthly check of the rate against the reference is a small effort that shows whether a provider's margin is eating into the benefit of a stronger Australian dollar.
