EUR to CAD in 2025: the year in numbers

Updated September 26, 2026

The euro averaged 1.5787 Canadian dollars in 2025, based on 255 ECB reference rates. That was 6.52% above the 2024 average of 1.4821. The euro started the year near its low, at 1.4885, and ended at 1.6088, a gain of 8.08%. The low of the year was 1.4699 on January 13 and the high 1.6393 on October 17.

The year in four phases

January and February: the low plateau. Monthly averages were 1.4904 and 1.4893. These were the cheapest months of the year for Canadians buying euros.

March and April: the breakout. The euro jumped in March, to an average of 1.5518, and kept rising in April to 1.5701. The March range, from 1.5104 to 1.5731, shows how fast the move was.

June to October: the climb to the top. After a pause in May, the euro crossed 1.6 at the end of June, closing the month at 1.6027. Monthly averages then rose to 1.6057 in August, 1.6226 in September and 1.628 in October, the highest of the year.

November and December: a gentle retreat. The euro eased to 1.6248 in November and 1.6168 in December, closing the year at its December low of 1.6088.

What the numbers mean

A strong euro year. The euro gained against most major currencies in 2025, and the Canadian dollar was no exception. An 8.08% rise from first to last fixing is large for a pair of developed-market currencies.

The second half was expensive for euro buyers. Every monthly average from July to December was 1.5982 or higher, while the first quarter never averaged above 1.5518.

December pulled back from the peak. The year-end rate of 1.6088 was below the October high, which matters for companies revaluing euro balances.

Who was affected

Canadian travellers in Europe. A trip to Paris, Lisbon or Rome cost noticeably more in Canadian dollars in the autumn than in the winter. The difference between the February and October averages was large enough to change a holiday budget.

Canadian importers. Wine, cars, machinery and pharmaceuticals from the euro area became more expensive in Canadian dollars through the year.

Canadian exporters to Europe. Seafood, minerals and aerospace products sold in euros brought in more Canadian dollars.

European companies in Canada. Local costs in Canadian dollars became cheaper in euro terms, which helped firms with Canadian operations.

Using 2025 figures

Where the accounting policy accepts ECB rates, use the yearly average of 1.5787 for income items and the year-end rate of 1.6088 for balances. Canadian companies often use the Bank of Canada's daily or annual average rates, so check which source applies.

For a 2026 budget, the last-quarter averages describe the current level much better than the yearly average, which is pulled down by the cheap first quarter.
