The euro averaged 7.8092 Chinese yuan in August 2026, based on 21 ECB fixings. The month began and ended almost in the same place, 7.7891 on August 3 and 7.7922 on August 31, a change of 0.04%. In between, the euro rose to 7.8624 on August 21 and then gave the gain back.
The numbers that matter for trade with China
European companies buying from Chinese suppliers often pay in yuan or in dollars priced off the yuan. For them, a higher EUR/CNY rate means cheaper goods in euro terms.
- Average: 7.8092 CNY per euro
- Low: 7.7767 on August 4
- High: 7.8624 on August 21
- Range: 1.1% from low to high
- Versus July 2026: the average rose 0.93% from 7.7371
- Versus August 2025: the average fell 6.41% from 8.3442
The shape of the month
For the first half of August, the rate moved sideways between 7.7767 and 7.7989. Up days and down days alternated. From August 14 the euro started to climb: 7.7977 that day, 7.813 on August 17, and a gain of 0.44% on August 20 that took it to 7.8538. The top came on August 21 at 7.8624.
The last week unwound it. The euro slipped on August 24, drifted lower through August 28, and dropped 0.42% on the final day of the month. Up days and down days almost matched: 10 against 11.

How an importer can read this
Consider a European retailer with a monthly order from a factory in Guangdong priced in yuan. Paying on August 21 gave the most yuan per euro in the month. Paying on August 4 gave the fewest. The difference between the two was the 1.1% range of the month, which on a large order can equal a good part of the freight bill.
Over a longer horizon the picture is less friendly to buyers. A year earlier, in August 2025, one euro bought 8.3442 yuan on average. The August 2026 average of 7.8092 was 6.41% lower. Yuan-priced goods have become more expensive in euros over the year, even though August itself was better than July.
For a Chinese exporter selling in euros, the same numbers read the other way: euro receipts converted into more yuan in August than in July, and fewer than last summer.
A note on the rate
The ECB publishes the yuan fixing as the renminbi reference rate, once per TARGET business day. China's onshore market has its own central parity set by the People's Bank of China, and offshore yuan trades in Hong Kong. Bank quotes will differ from all of these by a margin.
At the monthly average, one yuan was worth 0.12806 euros.
If your supplier offers a choice of invoice currency, the table above is a useful reference for that conversation. Paying in yuan puts the exchange risk on your side, and paying in euros moves it to the supplier, who usually builds it into the price.
