The year in three phases
January to March: the low point and the turn. The year began with the euro near parity. The low of 2025, 1.0198, came on January 13, and January averaged 1.0354. February was similar at 1.0413. In March the euro turned higher, averaging 1.0807.
April to July: the big climb. April brought the sharpest monthly change, with an average of 1.1214 and a range from 1.0788 to 1.1476. The euro kept rising through May (1.1278) and June (1.1516), and July averaged 1.1677.
August to December: a high plateau. The euro held its gains in the second half. The high of the year, 1.1837, came on September 17, and September had the highest monthly average, 1.1732. October and November eased slightly, to 1.163 and 1.156, before December averaged 1.1709 and closed the year at 1.175.

What the year meant for different readers
Companies budgeting in dollars. A European firm that set its 2025 budget at the rate of early January, around 1.0321, found that dollar costs became steadily cheaper in euros. By the end of the year each euro bought 1.175 dollars. For planning next year, the monthly averages above show how wide the range can be: from 1.0354 in January to 1.1732 in September.
US exporters to Europe. Sales priced in euros were worth more dollars as the year went on. Revenue converted at the December average of 1.1709 was much larger than the same euro amount converted in January.
Travellers. Americans visiting Europe in the summer of 2025 paid noticeably more than those who travelled in early spring. Europeans visiting the United States had the opposite experience.
Choosing a rate for annual reports
For an annual profit and loss statement, many policies allow the yearly average: 1.13 for 2025. For the balance sheet at December 31, the closing rate applies, which for 2025 was 1.175. In a year with a trend this strong, the gap between the average and the closing rate is large, so the choice has a visible effect on reported figures. Follow your written policy and apply it the same way each year.
