The long view: a much stronger Aussie dollar
A year ago, in August 2025, one pound bought 2.0711 Australian dollars on average. This August's average of 1.907 is 7.92% lower. The average also slipped 0.68% compared with July.
What this means for movers and travellers
Emigrating to Australia. Britons moving to Perth, Sydney or Brisbane often transfer house sale proceeds or savings in one large amount. On such sums the difference between 1.9225 and 1.8879 in the same month is substantial. The yearly move matters even more: the same pounds buy noticeably fewer Australian dollars than they did last summer.
Holidaymakers. A trip to Australia costs more in pounds than a year ago. Prepaying accommodation early in the month would have locked in the better rate of August.
Australians in the UK. For working holiday visa holders sending pounds home, the lower rate is unwelcome. For Australians paying UK costs from savings in Australian dollars, the same move helps: at the monthly average one Australian dollar bought 0.5244 pounds.
Businesses. Australian exporters selling to Britain receive pounds that convert into fewer Australian dollars than a year ago. British companies paying Australian suppliers enjoy the reverse.
About cross rates
The ECB quotes every currency against the euro. GBP/AUD here is the euro rate of the Australian dollar divided by the euro rate of the pound on each business day. It tracks the market closely, while banks and transfer services add their own margin.
