USD to BRL in 2025: the year in numbers

The Brazilian real had a strong 2025 against the dollar. The dollar averaged 5.5896 reais over 255 ECB-based cross rates, and it fell from 6.2203 on the first fixing of the year to 5.4778 on the last, a drop of 11.94%. The first fixing was also the high of the year. The low came on November 12, at 5.2689.
Still, the yearly average was 3.77% higher than in 2024, when it stood at 5.3867. The dollar entered 2025 at a very high level, and it took most of the year for the real to bring it back down.
How the real recovered
January: the peak and the first retreat. The year opened at 6.2203, and the January average was 6.0281, the only monthly average above 6. By the end of January the dollar was already at 5.8383.
February to April: a plateau with a spike. Monthly averages held between 5.7675 and 5.7751. April had a sharp episode: the dollar touched 6.0548 before closing the month at 5.6132, its April low.
May to November: a steady decline. The monthly average fell from 5.6705 in May to 5.4544 in August and 5.3398 in November, the lowest of the year.
December: a partial rebound. The dollar rose again in December, averaging 5.4492 and closing the year at 5.4778.

What stands out
April's range. From 5.6132 to 6.0548, April was by far the most volatile month. A business that needed to buy dollars in the middle of April paid much more than one that waited until the end of the month.
Closing near the low. Several months, including January and April, closed at or near their lowest level. The real's gains often came late in the month.
The December turn. After months of mostly falling averages, December broke the pattern with a clear rise. For planning 2026, the question is whether that rebound continues.
Who was affected
Brazilian importers. Machinery, fertilisers, fuel and electronics bought in dollars became steadily cheaper in reais after the start of the year.
Exporters. Soybean, iron ore, coffee and beef exporters receive dollars. A stronger real reduced their revenue in reais, especially in the autumn.
Travellers. Brazilians visiting the United States or buying online from US stores found the dollar much cheaper in November than in January.
Investors. Foreign investors holding Brazilian assets gained in dollar terms from the real's appreciation. Brazilians holding dollar assets saw their value in reais fall.
Using the 2025 figures
For annual reporting, the yearly average of 5.5896 is a common figure for income items, and the year-end rate of 5.4778 for balances, where the accounting policy accepts ECB-based rates. In Brazil the Central Bank's PTAX rate is the usual official reference, so check which rate your policy requires.
Because the year began with an extreme high, the average overstates the level at which the dollar traded for most of the year. The monthly table gives a much clearer picture.
