What it means for Czech firms and households
Car and machinery exporters. The Czech economy exports heavily, mostly to the euro area, but part of the revenue and many input costs are in dollars. A cheaper dollar lowers the koruna cost of components bought in dollars.
Energy and commodities. Oil and gas contracts are often priced in dollars. A koruna that buys more dollars eases import bills.
Travel and online shopping. Czech travellers heading to the United States or buying from US stores paid fewer korunas per dollar than in July. At the monthly average one koruna bought 0.047948 dollars.
Investors. Czechs holding US shares saw the koruna value of those holdings shrink slightly as the dollar weakened.
A note on bookkeeping
In the Czech Republic, accounting often relies on the rates published by the Czech National Bank. The ECB-based figures here are a reliable benchmark and help check what a bank or payment service charged. Before using them in official records, confirm with your accountant which source your policy requires.
Compared with the euro
The koruna moved less against the euro in August than against the dollar. For companies with costs in euros and sales in dollars, or the other way round, the dollar side carried most of the currency risk this month.
Anyone setting a budget rate for the autumn can use the August average of 20.857 as a starting point and allow for a monthly swing of around 2%, the range seen in August.
