The value of a longer view

Looking only at the first and last day, August was quiet: the dollar lost 0.42%. The daily table shows a very different experience for someone who needed dollars on a particular day. Buying on August 26 and buying on August 7 differed by the full range of the month.

The year-on-year comparison gives yet another view. A forint that is 8.04% stronger against the dollar than a year ago makes dollar-priced imports, software, travel and education in the United States noticeably cheaper for Hungarian buyers.

Who is affected

Hungarian manufacturers. Car plants and electronics factories import parts priced in dollars and sell mostly in euros. A stronger forint against the dollar lowers their input costs.

Energy buyers. Oil and gas priced in dollars cost fewer forints than a year ago.

Tourists visiting Hungary. Visitors from the United States find Budapest more expensive than last summer. At the monthly average one forint bought 0.0031904 dollars.

Spreading the risk

For companies that buy dollars every month, the August pattern argues for regular smaller purchases over one big conversion. Buying a fixed dollar amount every week would have averaged out the swings of August 18, August 26 and August 27, and landed close to the monthly average of 313.46.

About the source

These are cross rates from ECB euro fixings. The Hungarian National Bank publishes its own official rates, which domestic accounting often uses. The two series differ slightly because they are set at different times of the day.
