A better month, a harder year
Compared with July, the August average was 1.14% lower, which is welcome news for Indonesian importers and for anyone paying dollar bills in rupiah. The year-on-year comparison is less comfortable: the August 2026 average was 9.18% above August 2025.
Who feels it
Importers and manufacturers. Indonesia imports fuel, wheat, soybeans and many industrial inputs priced in dollars. A weaker rupiah over the year raises those costs, and August's improvement only reverses a small part of it.
Indonesians studying or travelling abroad. Fees and trips priced in dollars cost far more in rupiah than last summer.
Exporters and remittance receivers. Coal and palm oil producers, and families receiving money from relatives working abroad, gain from a weaker rupiah. Each dollar brings more rupiah than a year ago.
Foreign visitors to Bali and Jakarta. A stronger dollar makes Indonesia cheaper for them. At the monthly average one rupiah was worth 0.000056165 dollars.
Reading large numbers
With five-digit rates, small percentage moves look big in absolute terms. A change of 0.1% is close to 18 rupiah per dollar. When comparing quotes from banks or money changers, it helps to think in percentages rather than in raw rupiah differences.
Where the rate comes from
The ECB publishes the rupiah and the dollar against the euro once per business day. USD/IDR here is the ratio of those two fixings. Bank Indonesia publishes its own reference rate, known as JISDOR, which banks in Jakarta follow. The two series move together, and small differences on a given day come from the timing of the fixings. For tax and statutory accounting in Indonesia, the rate set by the authorities usually applies, so treat the ECB-based figure as a benchmark for comparison.
