What the table shows
The slide was persistent. In the second half of the year, each monthly average was higher than the previous one, from June through December. A persistent trend like this affects budgets more than a single volatile month, because it keeps adding up.
Some months ended at their extreme. July, August and September each closed at their monthly high: 87.624, 88.183 and 88.796. March and April closed at their monthly low. The closing rate is often used for month-end revaluation, so these extremes matter for accounts.
Monthly ranges were moderate. The widest months were April and July, each with a range of a little over two rupees. Every other month moved less than two rupees from low to high.
Who gained and who lost
Indian IT and services exporters. Companies billing US clients in dollars earned more rupees per dollar through the year. For an exporter, the 4.18% rise in the average was a direct boost to revenue in rupees.
Families receiving remittances. Indians working in the United States and the Gulf, where many currencies track the dollar, sent money that converted into more rupees, especially in the last quarter.
Importers and consumers. Crude oil, electronics and gold are largely priced in dollars. A weaker rupee raised their cost in India.
Students heading to the United States. Tuition and living costs in dollars became more expensive in rupees month after month. A family that bought dollars in May paid noticeably less than one buying in December.
Using the 2025 figures
For annual accounts, the yearly average of 87.166 is a common reference for income and expense items, and the last fixing of 89.869 for year-end balances, where the accounting policy allows ECB-based rates. Indian statutory reporting usually relies on the reference rates of the Reserve Bank of India or the rates published for customs, so check which source applies.
For planning 2026, the monthly table is more informative than the yearly average. The rate spent the whole last quarter well above the average for the year.
