A stronger ringgit, month and year
The ringgit gained both against July and against last year. At the monthly average, one ringgit bought 0.24601 dollars. A year earlier the dollar cost 4.2271 ringgit on average, and in August 2026 it cost 4.065.
What it means for Malaysians
Studying abroad. Many Malaysian students attend universities in the United States, Australia and the UK. Fees priced in dollars became cheaper in ringgit over the year, and the end of August was the best point of the month to pay.
Travelling. A holiday budget in ringgit buys more dollars than last summer.
Exporters. Malaysia sells palm oil, electronics, rubber gloves and liquefied natural gas priced in dollars. A stronger ringgit reduces the ringgit value of those sales, which exporters feel in their margins.
Workers abroad. Malaysians working in Singapore or further away who send money home receive fewer ringgit per dollar than a year ago.
Checking a quote against the benchmark
Money changers in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru often compete closely. Comparing their buy and sell rates with the fixing for the same day in the table above shows the margin each one charges. The mid-market level is where the ECB-based figure sits, and a counter rate will always be on either side of it.
About the source
Bank Negara Malaysia publishes its own reference rates. The ECB-based cross rate used here is calculated by dividing the euro fixings of the ringgit and the dollar. The two sources move together, with small differences due to the time of day when each is set.
