EUR to ILS in August 2026: high, low, average

Updated September 26, 2026

The euro averaged 3.4671 Israeli shekels in August 2026, based on 21 ECB reference rates. That was almost the same as in July (3.4629), and dramatically lower than a year earlier: in August 2025 the euro averaged 3.9507 shekels, so this August it was 12.24% cheaper. Within the month the rate travelled a range of 3.15%.

Two moments that defined August

The slide to August 14. The euro opened at its monthly high of 3.5194 and then lost ground on most days. It fell 0.98% on August 4, the largest drop of the month, and 0.77% on August 14, which brought it to the low of 3.4118.

The rebound of August 18 to 20. In three fixings the euro recovered almost all of that ground. It rose 1.23% on August 18, the largest gain of the month, and 0.82% on August 20, reaching 3.495.

After that the shekel regained part of the lost ground in the last week, and the euro closed at 3.4647. The euro fell on 13 fixings and rose on 8.

A shekel stronger than a year ago

The year-on-year fall of 12.24% is the key number for Israeli households and businesses dealing with Europe.

Israeli travellers to Europe. Trips to Greece, Cyprus, Italy and elsewhere in the euro area cost considerably fewer shekels than a year ago. At the monthly average one shekel bought 0.28844 euros.

Israeli exporters. Firms selling to European customers in euros, from medical devices to agricultural produce, receive fewer shekels per euro. Many have to raise euro prices or accept thinner margins.

European investors. Holding Israeli assets has become more valuable in euro terms thanks to the stronger shekel.

Students and families. Israelis studying in Europe, or families paying tuition in euros, benefit from the lower rate.

Volatility within the month

The euro moved by more than half a percent on five days in August. On the busiest days, a payment of the same size in euros differed noticeably in shekels depending on whether it was made before or after the move. For large conversions, splitting the amount over several days limits the effect of a single volatile fixing.

Anyone who converted on August 14 and again on August 20 saw a gap of more than 2% between the two fixings, only four business days apart.

Where the rate comes from

The ECB publishes the shekel in its list of euro reference rates each business day. The Bank of Israel sets its own representative rate. The two series track each other closely, with small differences because they are set at different times.
