What this means for travel between Europe and Japan
Europeans visiting Japan. A higher EUR/JPY rate means more yen per euro, so travel in Japan became steadily cheaper for euro holders through 2025. A trip in December got far more yen per euro than a trip in February.

With a trend this strong, the closing rate sits far from the yearly average. That gap produces sizeable translation differences for companies with balances in yen, so it is worth explaining in the notes which rate was used for which item.
Planning with a trending pair
When a pair has moved in one direction for most of a year, a budget based on the yearly average will understate the current level. For the next year's plans, the last months of 2025, with averages from 176.15 to 182.5, are closer to where the rate stood at year end. A margin for a reversal is still sensible: the early months of 2025 show how far the rate can sit below the year's closing level.
The quiet and the busy months
Not every month moved the same amount. August 2025 was one of the calmest, staying between 170.42 and 172.67. October was one of the busiest, from 172.47 to 178.37. When you look up the rate for a past transaction, the monthly range tells you how much the exact day matters: in a calm month the average is a good approximation, in a busy one it can be far off.
