Why the year-on-year gap matters more than the daily one

Daily changes in EUR/RON were small in August: none reached a fifth of a percent. The comparison with August 2025 tells a bigger story. A year ago the euro averaged 5.0651 lei, so this August it was 3.64% more expensive in lei.

For Romanian families with loans, rent or tuition in euros, that yearly move is what shows up in the household budget. For companies paid in euros, such as IT exporters and manufacturers selling in the EU, each euro of revenue now converts into more lei than last summer.

Using the rate for bookkeeping

Romanian companies often keep books in lei while signing contracts in euros. The ECB fixing is a useful reference, and many firms also follow the rate of the National Bank of Romania for tax purposes. Check which source your accounting policy names before you choose.

A quick check for households

If your salary is in lei and a loan instalment is in euros, compare the fixing on your payment date with the monthly average of 5.2493. Paying on a day below the average, such as August 17, meant a slightly smaller bill in lei. The effect is small in a quiet month like this one, and it adds up over a year of instalments.
