What a strong shekel means
For Israeli tech companies. Many Israeli technology firms earn most of their revenue in dollars while paying salaries in shekels. A falling USD/ILS rate squeezes their margins. Over the past year that effect has been large.
For Israeli consumers. Imported goods priced in dollars, trips to the United States and online purchases all cost fewer shekels. At the monthly average one shekel bought 0.33439 dollars.
For investors. Israelis holding US shares or dollar deposits saw the shekel value of those assets shrink as the dollar weakened, even if the assets themselves gained in dollars.
For donors and families abroad. Support sent in dollars to relatives or institutions in Israel converts into fewer shekels than a year ago.
Managing a volatile rate
A range of 3.44% in a month, with two days moving by more than 1%, calls for a plan rather than a guess. Businesses with regular dollar income often convert a fixed share every week or use forward contracts through their bank. Individuals making a single large conversion can split it over several days.
About the source
The Bank of Israel publishes its own representative rate each business day. The ECB-based figure here comes from dividing the euro fixings of the shekel and the dollar. The two usually differ only slightly.
