A krone much stronger than last year
The comparison with August 2025 is the most striking figure: a year ago the dollar averaged 10.201 kroner, and this August it averaged 9.4262, a fall of 7.6%. Norwegians who travel to the United States, buy American goods online or hold dollar-priced subscriptions now pay noticeably fewer kroner.
Oil, the krone and the dollar
Norway's economy relies heavily on oil and gas, which are priced in dollars. For the state and for energy companies, a stronger krone means fewer kroner per barrel sold. For Norwegian households, the same effect makes imported goods cheaper.
The sovereign wealth fund, which invests abroad, reports its value in kroner as well. When the krone strengthens against the dollar, the kroner value of its dollar assets falls even if those assets rise in dollar terms.
Practical points
Paying US invoices. A Norwegian company paying a US supplier needed fewer kroner at the end of August than at the start. The best day was August 21.
Receiving dollars. Freelancers and exporters converting dollar income got the most kroner early in the month, around August 4.
Monthly bookkeeping. For income and expenses the monthly average of 9.4262 is a common reference, and the closing rate of 9.3412 fits month-end balance revaluation, depending on your accounting policy. At the monthly average one krone was worth 0.1061 dollars.
About the data
